15.04.12 - Kwinana United beat Stirling Panthers 3-1 to kick off new season
Kwinana United First Team started the season off strong with a solid 3-1 win away from home at Stirling Panthers on Sunday.
Kwinana started the game strongly, taking control of possession and playing some good football. With the team passing the ball well, it wasn’t long before Nathan Little found the net, scoring a low down header from a great Sam Thomason cross.
Stirling, after conceding, started to move much better and created some decent chances with good movement through the middle of the park and down the wings, but for much of the remaining half neither team created anything of note in the attacking thirds.
After half time, Kwinana started slowly with Stirling dominating the first 10 minutes of the half creating problems at the back for Kwinana and enjoying the run of play. With the game in the balance Kwinana kicked back into gear with Anthony Harris playing a ball to Nigel Burke who, with a well timed ‘dummy’, put Captain Glen Smith through on goal, cutting back past a desperate defender and slotting the ball into the back of the net.
Once again Stirling lifted with their backs against the wall and as a result scored with an excellent finish, driving the ball past Chad Fruend who could only get fingertips to the ball. With the score at 2-1 and the game a becoming a tight battle, both teams were on the attack but the defending from Kwinana was solid, with an instrumental performance at the back once again by veteran Chris Atkins.
With the result still in the balance a great individual goal by Stuart McCall was the sealer. After taking a long ball on the chest and getting past two defenders, he rocketed the ball home from close range making it 3-1. The final whistle blew with Kwinana starting off season 2012 in style.
Earlier in the day Kwinana Reserves lost a tight game 1-0 after a late goal by Stirling with 5 minutes to go. Kwinana had most of the chances throughout the day but failed to capitalise on the good football missing half a dozen good opportunities in both halves of the game. Solid performances from Edward Kent and big man Gavin were the standouts for Kwinana. The only sour note was an injury early in the game to Sweeper Cameron Lord.
